Belgian emigrants started settling in northeast Wisconsin in 1853. They were attracted with promises of good weather, good people, and fertil farm land that could be had for $1.25 per acre. They brought with them their traditions, their stories, their food (Belgian tripp, Belgian pies, etc), and of course their sense of hard work. But the most important thing they brought with them is their strong Catholic faith and their devotion to the Rosary. Every story they told seems to include elements of their faith: building a church, following Fr. Edward Daems to Bay Settlement (a fellow Walloon-speaking Belgian from their homeland), preparing for the Kermiss, and yes, building roadside chapels. Roadside chapels are just that, chapels built along the road, most of them open 24/7 for any traveler to stop by and pray.

This is a list of 26 roadside chapels of which I'm aware that are open to anyone who wants to visit and pray at any time. They're all located in Brown, Door, or Kewaunee Counties.

Note that it's often difficult to map to rural farms, where the names of roads and municipalies are not consistent. Some modern GPS tools are unaware of certain roads and addresses, sending you to a location miles away from what you're looking for. Therefore, I've included the exact latitude and longitude coordinates of each chapel. So, you can use either the street address or the GPS coordinates, but the coordinates may work better.
